My favorite sermon today is from the archives of Elevation church preached by pastor Steven Furtick in 2018. It is titled „the movie in my mind“
Honestly, I was just going to post this message with a short message on my Instagram (because I had another message in mind for my next blog post) but then I realized I had so much more to say from my conviction that I couldn’t summarize my thoughts into an insta post.
This sermon has been like that annoying mosquito sound on your ears. It has been on my mind for months. I couldn’t find the video on YouTube until I checked the church‘s official website.
Many of us have heard of or read the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42. It’s hard to acknowledge the „Martha character“ in us, I guess we all want to be Mary in the story, at the feet of Jesus.
If you haven’t read it, here is my version of the story. You can also use your imagination of the scene if you want to.
Well, Jesus comes to Bethany to visit Martha with his people and Martha goes on to make a meal for them but Mary stays at Jesus’s feet listening to his words of wisdom. Martha is like, “is this sister of mine ok? Doesn’t she see that we have work to do? Guests to feed?” It must have been a while before she acted on her emotions because by the time she goes to them, her tone had changed! She forgot who her guest was! I mean, Martha had the audacity to walk up to Jesus and command (sounds like it) or tell him (God) what to do! Anyways, Jesus tells Martha to chill and that it was Mary that was in the right. Must have been embarrassing! I can imagine Mary’s face, Martha probably bullied Mary her whole life, until that day.
It’s hard to admit but I am Martha, I have been multiple times! I badly want to be Mary but Mary is annoying to most people! I sadly am not good at relaxing. Although (not to be too harsh on myself) I do also have some Mary tendencies but I lean towards Martha most times.
Well here comes the part that convicted me!
According to pastor Steven, here is what you need to know about Martha. She has written the script of her whole life and is directing the scenes as she goes. In her mind, everyone should act the way she wants to or be who she wants them to be and do what pleases her. She is the director of not only her life but also the lives of others.
She is manipulative, she has a victim mentality, she wants to control outcomes (control freak), she is a stresse factor, meaning that she is always worried & troubled (Jesus’s words), she is a people pleaser and most of all Bold! I mean, she is out of her mind thinking she can tell God (Jesus) what to do 😂😂 hmmm the audacity! (Side note, I do this A LOT!!)
What is unfortunate is that Martha misses out on life as she tries to control outcomes. Martha burns herself out and remains unsatisfied, with life and with the people around her. Martha will never be satisfied! What a sad reality!
The truth thought, is that society or life experiences have pushed many of us to be like Martha. Even our roles at work and in our homes demand that we be Martha but while we burn ourselves out, Jesus is waiting on us to chill and allow him to be God!
We need to give God his job back and be still and know that he is in control (Psalms 46:10). Let us try to be like Mary, unbothered by life’s worries in the presence of God.
Nevertheless, I believe a little bit of both comes in handy because both were created in God’s image!
As I embark on this journey of self reflection, I ask you to join me as we choose to give control back to the one who actually has it. Let us rest in the knowledge that he gets where we are coming from and that he is here to take back his role as the director of our lives. All we need to do is trust him!
I hope this message causes you to fight the Martha that is trying to make your life restless.
With Love and prayers,
Resty Kansiime
