Just Hold On

Sermon: Mary Did you Know (Maverick City Music Version)

Have you ever wondered what thoughts went through Mary’s mind when she accepted God’s calling to carry baby Jesus? There is no way she really knew what she was about to birth. I wonder, after the Angel told her the good news, if she really understood the assignment she had been given? That she had been chosen to raise God!! Being humble, she just trusted God. Perhaps, this is why God chose her. How I wish I could be like Mary!

My favorite sermon today is a message by Chandler Moore in the song that I always have on replay during this season and throughout the year. “Mary did you know” is a song by Michael English, but my favorite version is one by Maverick City because of the additional words said by Chandler Moore.

First, here is the first verse that asks some very interesting questions;

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you

This makes me think of all the people God has called over the centuries. Ordinary people who were going on with their lives but were called by God to change history and impact our world and faith. People who lived imperfect lives but were destined for greater things according to God’s perspective.

For instance, I wonder what life (stubborn) Peter lived before he got onto the boat, maybe he felt hopeless just like many others in his generation who were oppressed by the Roman Empire. Remember Abraham, Moses, David, Job, Paul, Peter, Lazarus, Woman with the issue of blood, Samaritan woman, etc.?

We know the stories of great individuals in our generation who are changing the world, some of them went through the worst before they got to where they are. They didn’t understand why, and their parents didn’t either. Oprah, Joyce Meyer, Steven Furtick, TD Jakes, and so on. Even our children, family members and friends who are doing amazing work to change lives.

Please remind them of how good they are so that we can encourage them to not give up on their calling! You never know you may be responsible for raising or helping the next president, preacher, disciple.

Furthermore, just like Mary and Joseph did, maverick city goes on to encourage us to hold on and trust the process that God is taking us through. They tell us that we each have greatness inside of us that’s going to contribute to God’s kingdom.

Chandler asks, “now i ask myself, chandler do i know? do you know what’s inside of you? it may hurt, it may be painful, but greatness is inside of you

If you can imagine what Mary and Joseph went through as they struggled to explain their situation to people, as they struggled to find a place for Mary to birth Jesus. I am sure it did not make sense to them why this miracle child was changing their lives (in that moment) for the worst! BUT GOD DID! It’s precisely why he chose them.

For many of us who feel like the circumstances around us do not make sense. Chandler adds,

you may be in a season right now where the lord has something in you that’s gonna shake the earth and you may be hurting, you may be crying, pillows wet with tears, but what the lord has placed inside of you, what the lord has placed inside of you, will change generation after generation..”

The world, your family, your children, society, the government, your husband, your wife, your partner, your teachers, etc. do not need to understand your situation. If you feel called by God to do something, do it!

He adds, “they may not understand right now, they may think you’re in a hole right now, they may think you’re in a dark season but greatness is inside of you don’t”

this process is necessary mary…it’s inside of you don’t let go, hold on through the condemnation

Everybody has something they were put on earth to do. Some choose to ignore their calling, others give up! But this message reminds us to keep going despite our feelings or pain because there is greatness ahead.

May the celebration of the birth of our savior remind us of the ordinary lives that were changed by God. May they remind us that we are never too young, too old, too messed up, too poor or too rich to be used by God. We are all created to add value to his kingdom.

Whatever you are going through right now, he is going to use it for his glory! Just hold on! Trust the process. That child/husband/wife that you think is so messed up, God is going to use their lives.

I Pray that God may reveal to you what he sees (in you) that you do not see in yourself or others.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

With love and prayers,

Resty Kansiime
