Just like Jesus’s teaching on the mountain is referred to as “The Sermon on the Mountain.” I chose a scripture in the old testament, Psalms 23 by King David, as my favorite sermon because it has preached to me on countless occasions.
This Psalms speaks to me because I am fascinated and inspired by King David’s story. Before he became King, King David was a shepherd. What made God’s promises come to pass in his life was that he put all his trust in the Lord. He trusted God to provide for his every need. Like sheep do because they need a shepherd to survive or they would easily be devoured. David knew that without God he could not succeed; he would have perished. With God on his side, he knew that he could do great and mighty things. David came from being a Shepherd to becoming King. Through his marvellous experience, I learn to always stand on the promises of God and trust in him. Surely, He is not a man that he should lie.
I relate to the Psalms because it uplifts my spirits whenever I reflect on it. When I feel like I am going through a difficult situation (like sheep would in the field due to bad weather, or scanty pastures), I remind myself that God is with me through it all. I remind myself that he shall provide for my every need, that he sees me, he cares for me, and that he shall protect me no matter what.
David talks about going through the valley of the shadows of death, this tells me that life shall have trials and times when you feel like you might just die from the situation. For instance, the loss of my dad is one way I felt like the world had come crashing down on my family and I. However, as time has gone by, God has restored our souls. We are joyful and are basking in his blessings. Fear flourishes where there is worry. This is all the work of the devil. From this psalm I learn to fear no evil because it is clear that God is always with me. All we need to do, as believers, is to call upon the name of the Lord.
Moreover, the Lord delights in seeing us happy and prosperous. During the recent preparation for my traditional wedding, I was sad because there was opposition from various people that may have wanted to disorganise the function (or maybe they would have been happier if it didn’t happen). However, I still went back to the psalm asking God to prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies and indeed, God did it! At the perfect time, with the perfect weather and everyone present, the Lord did it! A colorful celebration it was. Evidently, it was God that did it.
I have learned over and over again and I have seen it happen. That we attract into our lives what we focus on. I now try as much as I can to speak positively into my life. To say, I am blessed beyond compare, I know no lack, my cup runneth over, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
I encourage you to have a positive attitude to life. Seek first the kingdom of God and all things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6: 33). Speak positively into your life because the tongue has the power to create or destroy (Proverbs 18: 21).
Also, what you say to other people matters. It can either uplift their spirits or tear them apart. Be the person that makes someone else see life in a better way with light at the end of the tunnel and make them hopeful.
No matter what you go through in life, have faith! Know that the trouble you are in shall not last. Keep your eyes on God through both the good and tough times. You shall experience God’s unending love and blessings.
Keep the faith
Jo
